Dr. Karakis is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Crete and Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Emory University in Atlanta, U.S.A., where he directed for several years the Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (NIOM) Services, the Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology (CNP) Fellowships and the Electroencephalography(EEG)/Epilepsy Services at Grady Hospital. Dr. Karakis graduated with honors from the Medical School of Athens. Subsequently he completed Neurology Residency at Boston University Medical Center, serving as the Chief Resident. He then specialized in CNP by completing a two-year fellowship with focus on EEG, Epilepsy and NIOM at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a one-year fellowship with focus on Electromyography (EMG) and Neuromuscular (NM) Medicine at Lahey Clinic and Boston Children’s Hospital. He also completed an MSc degree in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and a PhD thesis in Epilepsy in the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. He is board-certified in Neurology, CNP, NM Medicine, and Epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), in CNP with added competency in NIOM by the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology (ABCN) and in EMG by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM). Dr. Karakis has been elected as a fellow of the American Neurological Association (ANA), American Academy of Neurology (AAN), American Epilepsy Society (AES), American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology (ACNS) and American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM). He also serves as a member of the CNP Examination Committee of the ABPN. He is interested in medical education and was conferred with the 2013 Faculty Teaching Award and 2014 Resident’s Friend Award by the Emory University Neurology Residency Program, as well as the 2015 AB Baker Teacher Recognition Award by the AAN, the 2023 Distinction in Teaching Award by the ACNS and the Emory University 2023 Distinguished Physician Award. His research interests span the whole spectrum of CNP and its clinical applications. He has >95 peer-reviewed applications with >1500 citations (H-index: 18). He is a member of the Editorial Board of the official journal of the Hellenic Neurological Society («Archives of Clinical Neurology»), the official journal of the American Epilepsy Society («Epilepsy Currents»), the official educational journal of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) («Epileptic Disorders»), the official journal of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) («Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology») and the journal Epilepsy and Behavior.
